Black Friday started in the USA and has now spread across the world. It is the Friday after the US Thanksgiving holiday which is always on the fourth Thursday in November. Most employees get Thanksgiving as a day off and many people also take the Friday off as well, giving them a four-day weekend.
To tempt buyers into the shops, retailers started offering special deals on the Friday. And then it spread to the rest of the weekend and to all of the following week.
The name is said to derive from the idea that this is the day that shops ‘move into the black’, meaning they have enough money to cover their costs while reducing prices.
