The brief history of Ilton
Ilton is known for its rich history, with many landmarks of the past still present in the village.
One such landmark is the Merryfield estate, which was the seat of the well-known Wadham family in the 15th and 16th century. Today, the moated site is all that remains of the estate, which was demolished in the 17th century. However, monuments to the Wadham family can be seen elsewhere in the village, such as in Ilton’s Church of St Peter and neighbouring Ilminster’s Church of St Mary.
The Chard Canal can also be seen near to the village, having been built in the 18th century with the unfulfilled intention of becoming part of a ship canal between the English and Bristol Channels.
The village is near to the Merryfield Aerodrome, which was used as a bomber base in World War II and continues to be used for helicopter landing training today.
