Built as a reservoir to deliver fresh water to towns in the East Midlands, including nearby Peterborough, it provides important habitat for wildlife including wildfowl and ospreys and is a centre for water sports, trout fishing and cycling.
The density of population in Rutland is low with less than one person per hectare. Rutland has been classed as the most rural county in England and Wales with a high proportion of land in agricultural use.

Things to do and see in Rutland
The central attraction in Rutland is Rutland Water. Close to the county town of Oakham, the reservoir offers a range of activities including sailing and kayaking, cycling, rock climbing, fly fishing and birdwatching. As well as a bird watching centre and visitors’ centres there is an aqua park while the Rutland Belle lets you take in the scenery from the water.
Rutland has a wealth of country pubs, many of which offer excellent dining opportunities, while the restaurant at Hambleton Hall has held a Michelin star since 1982.
Other attractions include stately homes like Belton House and Burghley House, Oakham Castle, Lyddington Bede House, Gates Garden Centre, Wing Maze and Clipsham Yew Tree Avenue. There is plenty to do for all the family in Rutland.
Transport in Rutland
Rutland has the A1 trunk road on its Eastern border and the A47 East/West trunk road on its Southern edge. Both provide access to Leicester, Peterborough and Stamford as well as major towns and cities further afield. A network of smaller roads connects Oakham and Uppingham with the other villages in Rutland.
A cross-country rail service links Oakham with Stamford and Peterborough where commuters can connect with mainline services to London.
Education in Rutland
Rutland has well-known independent public schools in Oakham and Uppingham. There is also a range of primary and secondary state education options available in those towns.
Secondary education is available at Catmose College, Casterton College and Uppingham Community College. Further education options are available at Rutland County College in Oakham and at colleges in nearby Peterborough and Stamford.

A brief history of Rutland
Rutland was a sparsely settled and wild region during Roman occupation and didn’t form a part of any of the Saxon kingdoms but there were important Saxon settlements in Cottesmore and North Luffenham dating from the 5th and 6th centuries.
The brief battle of Loosecoat Field was fought near Tickencote during the Wars of the Roses and there were some standoffs around the county during the English Civil War.
Rutland was first referred to as a separate county in 1159. The wool trade became important in the area from the 14th century. Rutland has remained a predominantly agricultural county ever since.
Rutland Water was created in the mid-1970s by damming the river Gwash and flooding its valley.
